Can we sell sunlight after dark?
Was hard to keep this one quiet. Reflect Orbital was created to sell sunlight to thousands of solar farms after dark.
Why? Three things:
1) We don’t have limitless clean energy.
2) We do have rockets figured out.
3) Solar dominates the energy industry - until the sun sets.
A constellation of simple reflector satellites in LEO can turn on solar farms at night. The key is getting a lot of cheap mirror area into space and then making good money with it. Sunlight is the new oil.

Random Building 2 - The College Files

Honestly this feels especially indulgent and insane to look back at mid pandemic. I managed to finish college in April, Here is what I got up to dodging boredom along the way. Don't worry, I don't put boring school stuff in these videos. This video probably isn't for everyone, its fast paced but really long and I tried to edit in a way that feels like how I spend my days - in 10 different place...
DEEP Underwater Camera Build and Test in Lake Tahoe

I build and test a camera that should be good to go down 2,000FT (6000ft if I'm feeling really sporty). I've always wanted to send a camera to the bottom of lake tahoe and other deep places around the world. This is not the final chapter, as I still have a lot of ideas that I really want to try out. Working 70 hour weeks all summer and fall (plus training) certainly didn't leave me with much ex...

Between working at SpaceX and going to college I don't want to spend too much of what little time I have leftover continuing to sit in a chair on a computer. Its just not what I want to do. (none came from Patreon, this was more of a me-thing) The rigid foam was pretty hard to work with and looked like crap, but it does work quite well. The bendy stu...

I made a Deep sea lander (yet to test it in the ocean) but it works great in the lakes! I also finished up the ROV, which I hope to do some exploring with later on. Would love to hear your approach to folding/inflating/expanding geometry. Obviously you'd want the reflective area to be maximum size, and still adjustable, is it one satellite for one solar farm, or is it multiplex... And especially what's the cost per kw? This operation, needs to be so efficient, that it's both cheap to sell, and covers the satellite launch cost. If you can get a durable system going, and have each sat work for decades, it could pay itself back and be cool for humanity, light on demand.. Thanks a lot and all the best ❤ Subscribed

    Wouldn't this work better at higher latitudes where the earth spins slower and can thus extend solar farms in polar regions to a higher percentage change than say the equator. I.e Improving solar time in polar regions by a few hours compared to maybe an hour at the equator.

    As always inspiring work, but has there been any investigation into the potential ecological or environmental impact of large amounts of extra directed sunlight being emitted into environments that as i understand it have had a stable/limited day/night cycle up til now? I understand that this would be operating in limited areas but it seems very much like a concept with a ludicrous number of potential unexpected side effects regarding environmental and ecological systems that the earth relies upon, for example I'm no scientist or engineer in a true sense but I feel like there is natural concern when scaling this solution as wouldn't this potentially be an awful lot of extra energy being directed to the earths surface? At larger scales would it not also impact local temp/climate if you're illuminating entire solar farms? Just curious if this is something you've looked into thoroughly (i assume you would have so I guess I'm asking more whether you found conclusive evidence that these concerns aren't anything to be worried about)

    While this is neat, the issue is the same as with the constellation of internet satellites up top. Pollution and at that, at night, the light pollution this would cause. This makes science very difficult to do and AT that, this kind of device in orbit would give the entire planet a huge middle finger should it block the observation of something like an asteroid.

    • @175griffin
      @175griffin 4 місяці тому

      It would only be practical near sunset and sunrise, but that could still be a massive upgrade to existing solar farms. Humanity likes energy more than it cares for science and the wellbeing of the Earth. If it's an economical solution, people with money will make sure it happens. Not saying that's a good thing, just inevitable under current systems.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 4 місяці тому

      @@175griffin This isn't about sunset or sunrise, because you wouldn't do this in a balloon. That's not economical. This whole endeavor cost more than it put into those solar panels. No this is about putting satellites with deflectors in space. That means full use at night by beaming energy (via mirror) to the dark side. In truth, this is about the limitations of political Earth. In a more civilized society, the entire planet would be pockmarked with solar panels and solar boilers, crisscrossed with cabling and sharing energy, paid by all govs under one international program. Then this issue (after dark) wouldn't be there, because at all times, the Grid would produce enough electricity to power even the dark side.
